Review – Finale

Title: Finale

Series: Caraval #3

Author: Stephanie Garber

4 stars

This is the last book in a trilogy so if you have not read Caraval and Legendary then please read this review at your own risk, but you will be spoiled for some things happening in the books.

It’s been two months since the Fates were freed from a deck of cards, two months since Legend claimed the throne for his own, and two months since Tella discovered the boy she fell in love with doesn’t really exist.

With lives, empires, and hearts hanging in the balance, Tella must decide if she’s going to trust Legend or a former enemy. After uncovering a secret that upends her life, Scarlett will need to do the impossible. And Legend has a choice to make that will forever change and define him.

Caraval is over, but perhaps the greatest game of all has begun. There are no spectators this time—only those who will win, and those who will lose everything.

We have come to the end of the show, but the game is far from over. This has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for me. It started out strong with Caraval ending on my best books of 2017 (published in ’16, but I was slow) then I didn’t read Legendary until last year and by then I had forgotten a lot of what happened in Caraval – meaning Legendary didn’t really grip me in the same way and I found it harder to read (read my review of Legendary here).
This doesn’t really reflect on the story’s quality, but more of my ability to procrastinate reading sequels – so that one is mostly on me, but I still didn’t find the story to be as captivating as the first. The nightmare for all sequels to fall into – not living up to its predecessor’s success.

But I was invested and planned to finish this trilogy and now I have.
So here are my thoughts on Finale and the end of the Caraval story.

Initial thoughts

This book had a lot of the things that I enjoyed in the first book – the excitement, the daring tasks and the not knowing what is going to happen. And then throw in a little time travel and I was invested!

I definitely preferred Finale to Legendary although the ending felt a little rushed. The build-up was huge, but then everything happened in 3 pages. It was over way too quickly and I just felt like something was missing.
But that’s just me I guess.

I did like how it ended and it was with a smile that I closed the book and the story. And that is all I will say about the ending.

Scarlett and Tella didn’t annoy me quite as they did in Legendary, especially Tella. So that was a good thing. That was probably due to them sharing the book and balancing it out mroe than the first two where Scarlett “owned” Caraval and Tella “owned” Legendary. It was interesting seeing Scarlett evolve and explore her gift.

I’m sat here thinking of what couple I ship the most – Scarlett and Julian or Tella and Legend.. Who do you ship the most?

The Fates… Hmm. There were some of them that I would definitely like to know more about like The Assassin, The Lady Prisoner and of course Jacks. They were definitely the most interesting Fates for me.

The plot of Finale worked better than Legendary, but still not as good as Caraval. It felt rushed in some places, definitely towards the end, but the build-up was done great and the pacing increased steadily at the halfway mark in the book, which I really liked. That kept me hooked.

Final(e) thoughts

Overall I enjoyed this book, which is why I gave it 4 stars. It wasn’t quite up there with Caraval, which was a 5 star read for me. The trilogy as a whole was great, but for book 2 and 3 to match Caraval I think I needed a little more carnival vibe, though I get that you can’t rely on that throughout all three books. But this trilogy is definitely worth a read, especially if you are a fan of carnivals, games and sisterhood in fantasy.

What did you make of this trilogy?

  1. I definitely liked this one better than Legendary. It evened out the annoying qualities of the sisters. Your copy is so much prettier than the one I found! Lovely review 🙂
